Chapter 7 Test

On Thursday/Friday students take their test over Chapter 7. Mrs. Nickel is attending an all day meeting on Thursday and will not be in school.

Students should be reminded that all of Cognitive Tutor Chapter 7 is due by the end of the day on Friday, January 28th.

Wrapping up Chapter 7

Students spent last week and the first part of this week wrapping up Chapter 7. Thursday students enjoyed the day off because of a snow day. On Friday/Monday we covered sections 7.4 & 7.5 over proportional parts of triangles.

Students' assignmetn for Friday/Monday was Worksheet 7.4 (front) & 7.5 (back).

Tuesday/Wednesday students played an in-class review game to study for their test. There was no homework, but students should study for their test which is on Thursday/Friday of this week.

Tuesday/Wednesday review days

After the 4-day weekend, students spend Tuesday and Wednesday reviewing what was learned the previous two weeks about similarity and similar triangles. Students have two review assignments: The first one will hopefully be completed in class, and the second is a practice worksheet over similar triangles and may need to be finished as homework.

Similar Triangles Mirror Activity

Students had several application problems earlier in the week dealing with indirect measurement. When one object's height is known, shadows can be used to indirectly measure the height of another object. When shadows aren't available or practical to use, a mirror can be placed between the objects (typically between an object and a person) to find height.

On Wednesday/Thursday students will perform a similar activity in class. Working with a partner, one person will stand 7 feet from a mirror placed on the floor and the group must figure out how for the second person must stand from the mirror so that they can see each other's reflection when they look at the mirror. Students will use similar triangles and proportions to solve the problem.

Students' assignment is this in class activity, and there will be no "homework over the 4-day weekend. Students should continue to work in Cognitive Tutor. A goal would be to come back on Tuesday and at least be in section 3-1.

Section 7.3: Similar Triangles

On Monday/Tuesday of this week students learned about the 3 ways to determine if triangles are similar: AA~, SSS~, and SAS~. These tests are similar to the ones students learned about congruence during first semester. The difference is that sides only have to be proportional, and not the same length, to have similar triangles.

Section 7.2: Similar Polygons

On Thursday/Friday students learn about similar polygons. The determine if polygons are similar by looking at corresponding angles and checking to see if sides are proportional. When given similar polygons, students write similarity statements, use proporitons to find missing measurements, and determine the scale factor.

Section 7.1: Ratios & Proportions

Students will start out second semester with a chapter on similarity. On Tuesday/Wednesday we will review writing ratios and solving proportions.

Welcome Back for Second Semester!

I hope everyone had a refreshing break and is ready to start second semester. January is a fresh start for students. First semester grades have been turned in, and students start out with a blank slate. That makes this a great time to set new goals for how you want to do this semester. I know all of you are capable of achieving great things and I am here to encourage and support you in whatever way that I can. Best wishes as we start the second half of Geometry!
